What are LED grow lights?

LED grow lights are a popular light emitting diode technology increasingly being used for indoor plant growing. LED lights offer a multitude of benefits that traditional grow lighting fails to provide.

LEDs are designed and manufactured to provide targeted spectrum control for optimum plant growth. By producing different wavelengths (ultraviolet, blues, reds, infrared, etc), LED lights aid in a more natural growth process that is intended to simulate the light from the sun. Grow lights do not require a full-spectrum white light for optimal growth, as plants primarily absorb wavelengths from the blue and red regions of the color spectrum. Unlike high pressure sodium, metal halide, and fluorescents, LEDs provide plants with the exact light that they need to maximize flowering and growth.

In addition, LED lights are designed for efficiency. They promote stronger plant growth while helping to cut energy costs by roughly 50%.

How many watts of LED power do I need compared to HID lighting?

A 1:2 ratio is generally best, meaning that 1 watt of LED compares to 2 watts of HID. This, however, is the ACTUAL LED wattage, NOT the ADVERTISED LED wattage.

For example, a 3 watt LED, may only draw 1.5 watts, so the actual output is less than the advertised wattage.

Advertised LED wattage

It is generally best to plan for 40 watts of advertised wattage per square foot of growing area. For example, a light may have 150 x 3 watt diodes. The advertised wattage would be 450 watts. 450 watts / 40 watts per square foot = 11.25 square feet. Therefore, a 270 watt light will cover 11.25 square feet of grow space.

Actual LED wattage

You also can use the actual LED wattage to calculate the amount of watts needded for your grow space. As opposed to the 40 watts of advertised LED wattage , you will want around 32 watts of ACTUAL wattage per square foot of grow space.

We do not want to confuse you, but wattage should technically not matter when deciding on an LED grow light. This is a carryover from the age of traditional HID lighting. What matters is the PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density). PPFD is a measure of the number of photons in the 400-700nm range of the visible light spectrum that fall on a square meter of target area per second.

High PPFD numbers are good, because this means your plant is 'absorbing' enough light to carry out important physiological processes. Keep in mind that there are LED lights that have high wattages, but could have low PPFD numbers due to many factors such as: wide beam/lens angles, large distance between LEDs, an increased height above the canopy, and so on.

How far away should I setup my LED grow light from the plant canopy?

Recommended distances may vary based on the brand, light shape, actual wattage, coverage area, beam angle, etc. These factors all affect the Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR) that contacts the plants leaves. Different lights have different effects, but 18"-36" is a typical distance.

Can I veg with HID and flower with LEDs?

We would not recommend this. Plants become accustomed to a particular light intensity and spectrum, so switching abruptly between lighting sources could shock the plant.

What is your return policy?

Please see our return policy here.

What payment methods do you accept?

American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and PayPal.

Can you ship to a P.O. Box?

Yes. However, a residential or business address is preferred when placing an order. UPS cannot deliver to P.O. Boxes.

How do I cancel my order?

Contact us as soon as possible if you need to cancel your order. If your order has already been processed, a 15% restocking fee may be charged to your account.

How long does it take for my order to arrive?

We ship most lights using standard ground shipping. After the order is processed, shipping times can range from 3 days to 2 weeks or more depending on when the order was placed, availability, warehouse location, and in some cases, whether the light needs to be manufactured. If you need your light sooner, please let us know before you place your order and we will work to accommodate your needs.
